A deep Spirit-cleansing experience involving four smudging rituals. All that is necessary is to sit relaxed, alert and centred, facing East to direct awareness to the Higher Self. We begin with Mapacho, a Plant Maestro and guardian who purifies and protects, blowing smoke into the hands and on to the crown of the head. Then we encircle the bather with Sage, walking in a clockwise direction clearing the aura with feathers and intention. Cedar then brings further wisdom and protection, and we close the ritual with the loving energy of Lavender, wafting the smoke directly to the heart space to bring in positive vibrations and open this centre of compassion. A truly uplifting experience, especially for those sensitive souls, light workers and high vibrational beings.

Sage is one of the more common and accessible smudging herbs; one you may have heard about or worked with already. It is great for releasing and removing negativity and blends well with other herbs. For a divine pairing, clear with sage and bless with sweetgrass. Some people have a real aversion to the smell of sage; this type of reaction can often be emotional or tied to heavy, negative energies. The smoke is used to bless and wash off the outside world before entering into Ceremony or any sacred space so that only clear energy enters. Dried sage is burned, introducing the element of fire, then blown out and the smoke is wafted around the aura or physical space, using intention, gratitude and blessings. As with all herbs, extinguish by using a fireproof dish, salt or the earth, and give the remaining ashes to the earth outside.

This beautiful smelling wood grows on the coast of South America; Palo Santo, which translates to Holy Wood, has been used for smudging within the Native American culture for hundreds of years. It is now more widespread and commonly used for cleansing a person’s house, office, environment and physical body. The intentions behind using Palo Santo are to clear negative energies and to ground, connecting us to the earth. To use this holy wood, burn the end, blow out and let the smoke purify your space by walking around and wafting the smoke using either your hands or a feather smudger, letting this amazing scent work its magic. Alternatively, smudge yourself by wafting the smoke around your energetic body, front and back, up and down, inhaling its uplifting scent, raising your vibration and calming your mind. Perfect to prepare you for meditation or the rest of your day. It is said that Palo Santo brings good fortune for those who are open to receiving its magic.

Also called holy grass, vanilla grass or Seneca grass, it has an intoxicatingly sweet scent which is said to be the breath of Mother Earth. Using sweetgrass brings in the love of the Earth Mother, pure feminine energy. Traditionally, three strands are picked and braided together, representing the love, kindness and honesty she has for her people. It is said that sweetgrass calls in the good Spirits, so is a great tool for energy work and blessings, allow the smoke to travel far and wide around your being and your environment and let the magic happen. As sweetgrass offers more of a blessing than a cleansing, it works as a great partner to sage, first purifying negativity with the sage, then inviting in the positive blessings with sweetgrass, a match made in heaven.

Nicotiana Rustica, Sacred Amazonian Tobacco is another Master Plant Teacher. One of the most powerful plant Spirits on earth, Mapacho has long provided human beings with protection, cleansing and guidance. For smudging purposes, the smoke from a Mapacho pipe or roll is drawn in to the mouth and then blown over specific areas of the body or a spatial location. Note, this smoke is not to be inhaled directly into the lungs. Sacred Tobacco pairs naturally with Ayahuasca, and is almost always present in Ceremony.
There are many ways to work with this dynamic Power Plant, including smudging, as well as in the form of snuff, or ha-pay.

Mapacho’s essence is assertive and masculine which is what makes him so protective. This is brilliant for protection when working with other plant medicines, and even with dreams. If you experience nightmares or night terrors, try burning Mapacho before going to sleep to clear and protect, then Sweetgrass or Palo Santo to invite in positive energy and angels.

Cedar is a medicine of protection, the Cedar tree has very old, wise, powerful Tree Spirits and when used in smudging it is said that Cedar clears away any unwanted Spirits and protects the person, place or object from unwanted influences. Again used as a cleansing tool to smudge out negativity with the added bonus of bringing in protection. With a beautiful scent, it is a must have for all lightworkers and sensitive beings. A similar process is used when smudging with Cedar, lighting the wood, blowing out the flame and wafting the smoke around you and the environment you wish to clear, using the power of intention to purify.

This calming herb, usually blended with sage again offers the magic of protection. Lavender has been used as a medicine over the decades to calm the Mind, Body and Spirit and when used as a smudging herb it brings in a positive, loving energy and opens the heart chakra. A beautiful flower to use in combination with other plants and to use after having any healing work or Ceremony to bring us back into our heart space. As with all smudging herbs, Lavender is burned and the smoke is used for the cleansing ritual by wafting the smoke around the body or the space you are working in.
